Topic: Securing Australia’s Future: Meeting Our International Challenges.

Professor the Hon Gareth Evans AC QC FASSA FAIIA is Distinguished Honorary Professor at the Australian National University, where he was Chancellor from 2010-19 and President Emeritus of the International Crisis Group, the Brussels-based independent global conflict prevention and resolution organisation which he led from 2000 to 2009. He was a Cabinet Minister in the Hawke and Keating Labor Governments from 1983-96, in the posts of Attorney General, Minister for Resources and Energy, Minister for Transport and Communications and - from 1988-96 - Foreign Minister. During his 21 years in Australian politics he was Leader of the Government in the Senate (1993-96) and Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the House of Representatives (1996-98). From 2000 to 2009 he was President and CEO of the Brussels-based International Crisis Group, the independent global conflict prevention and resolution organisation.

Topic: The Futures of the World System in the next fifty to one hundred years

Professor Sohail Inayatullah is the inaugural UNESCO Chair in Futures Studies. This was held at USIM, Malaysia from 2016-2020. Since June 2021, he is the UNESCO Chair in Futures Studies at the Sejahtera Centre for Sustainability and Humanity, IIUM. He is a political scientist/futurist at Tamkang University, Taipei, an Associate at Melbourne Business School; the University of Melbourne and a researcher at Metafuture.org, a global think tank. He is most well known for theorising the futures technique of casual layered analysis.

Topic: A case of Culture:

Snigdha Nandipati is a patient advocate, writer, and first-generation Telugu-American with a strong curiosity for the sciences and a deep appreciation for the traditions of her Hindu culture. As a former Scripps National Spelling Bee champion and Yale graduate with a B.S. in Neuroscience, Snigdha has used her study of science, language, spirituality, and culture to guide her thought leadership. She delivered a TEDx talk about the intersection of science and tradition and made her authorial debut with A Case of Culture, a book about how patients from different cultures navigate the challenges of Western medicine.

Susmitha Ghatty is a young professional of Indian-Australian origin — she can be described as many things including a Strategic Thinker, Googler and ex-Macrobbian — but the description she is most proud of is someone who is passionate about self development and leadership. Having graduated from MacRob in 2012, Susmitha (or Sushie) completed a Commerce & Law degree at Monash and went on to intern and start as a graduate consultant at EY. Soon after, she made the jump to Google to start working in her dream job. Throughout the last 10 years, her curiosity and ambition fuelled her passion to explore the topic of self development, leading her to find and curate a series of frameworks and techniques that help her lead a continually improving and impactful life.

Topic: The Moral Case for Fossil Fuel Divestment

Katie Steele studied mathematics at the University of Queensland (BSc 1999). She later pursued an MA in philosophy at the University of Queensland (MA 2003), followed by a PhD in philosophy at the University of Sydney (PhD 2007). Katie was subsequently a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Australian Centre of Excellence for Risk Analysis at the University of Sydney. She then took up a position in the Department of Philosophy, Logic and Scientific Method at the London School of Economics and remained there from 2008 to 2016, when she joined the School of Philosophy at the ANU. Katie presently holds a 4-year ANU Futures Scheme grant and is a co-investigator on the 'Ethics and Risk' ARC Discovery Project as well as a co-investigator on the 'Climate Change and Future Generations' grant based at the Institute for Futures Studies, Stockholm. 

Q&A with Dr Ranjana Srivastava

Topic:  Things to Know Before Becoming a Doctor : An Oncologist Reflects 

Dr Ranjana Srivastava OAM, is an internationally-renowned oncologist, Fulbright scholar and award-winning writer. She is the recipient of the Medal of the Order of Australia for her contribution to the field of doctor-patient communication. In 2020, Ranjana received the John F Kennedy Merit Award and a second prestigious Fulbright award to obtain a Master in Public Administration at Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government.

Educated in India, the United Kingdom, the United States and Australia, Ranjana graduated from Monash University with a first-class honours degree and several awards in medicine. She has since worked in the public hospital system of Victoria. and specialises in geriatric oncology, the care of elderly patients with cancer. She has a keen interest in serving patients from culturally and linguistically diverse communities, who are often disadvantaged and vulnerable.

Ranjana’s writing has been published worldwide, including in Time magazine and The Week, and in medical journals The New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet, Journal of the American Medical Association and Journal of Hospice and Palliative Care Management. In 2008 her story Ode to a Patient won the Cancer Council Victoria Arts Award for outstanding writing. Ranjana’s inaugural Melbourne Magazine column was featured in the Best Australian Science Writing of 2012. 


Q&A with Dr Duminda Weerasoorsiya

Topic: Life as a Junior Doctor. The Good, The Great, and The Even Better; Why getting into Medicine is only the start.

Dr Duminda Weerasooriya is a Resident Medical officer at Monash Health  and is currently completing Basic Physician Training, with a view to undertake further training in Cardiology.  After graduating from MHS in 2011, Dimi undertook a Bachelor of Science at the University of Melbourne and then completed post-graduate Medicine at Deakin University in Geelong, graduating in 2019.  In this interactive Q/A, Duminda will be guiding through his unconventional journey, his current experience as a Resident Medical officer and the process of getting into medicine.

Daniel Odoi is the founder of Mamba moments, a Brisbane-based video content agency that helps start ups create video content. Prior to this, Daniel worked in various roles at Uber as well as was the marketing communications director Wing; Australia's first Drone delivery business.
